eBikes: are they legal?

eBikes: are they legal? E-Bike Guides | 7.02.24

In recent years, the popularity of electric bikes, or eBikes, has surged as individuals seek sustainable and efficient alternatives to traditional modes of transportation. However, as eBikes become more prevalent on roads and cycle lanes, questions surrounding their legality often arise. In this blog post, we’ll delve into the legal landscape of eBikes to help you understand the rules and regulations governing their use.

Understanding eBikes: what is an eBike?

eBikes are essentially bicycles equipped with an electric motor to assist in propulsion. Technically, they are known as ‘electrically assisted pedal cycles’ (or EAPCs). You do not need a licence to ride one and it does not need to be registered, taxed or insured.

They are legal as long as they abide by these 3 simple rules:

  1. An EAPC must have pedals that can be used to propel it
  2. Its electric motor must have a maximum power output of 250 watts
  3. The electric motor must not provide assistance when it’s travelling more than 15.5mph

Age restrictions: You can ride an electric bike only if you’re 14 or over

An electric bicycle not compliant with EAPC regulations (above the 15.5mph or 250w limit, or with a throttle) is categorized as a motor vehicle. These can sometimes be referred to as motorcycle, moped, a speed pedelec or s-pedelec, and require registration and taxation. Riding such a vehicle mandates a valid driver’s license and the use of a motor cycle helmet.

These faster bikes cannot be used on cycle lanes, but electric bikes are perfectly legal on UK roads as normal pedal bikes are.

In conclusion, it’s essential to understand that all Corratec eBikes adhere to the legal requirements outlined for electrically assisted pedal cycles (EAPCs). With pedals for propulsion, a maximum power output of 250 watts, and a speed limit of 15.5mph, Corratec eBikes meet the criteria set forth by regulations. As such, riders can enjoy the convenience and benefits of Corratec eBikes without worrying about their legality. Whether commuting through urban streets or exploring scenic bike paths, EBCO eBikes offer a legal and eco-friendly mode of transportation for individuals of all ages.
